Nara Shikaku, Ningen Shikaku
"
But over the following years, when he was inwardly even more frightened of his only two ‘best friends’, Chouza did not once behave any differently towards him: he neither exploited his knowledge to blackmail him, nor shunned him, nor seemed to have spread the truth to anyone else. And when the inevitable finally did happen and Inoichi caught a whiff of what lurked inside his mind, the only comment he made was “Man, I’m glad I’m not a genius like you. You sure have issues I could never even begin to imagine, my friend!” accompanied by a sigh and a pat on the shoulder, before he added: “Let’s get drunk tonight! You’ll surely forget your worries for a while once you get to loosen up a little.” And before he even knew how to react, he was dragged off into one of Konoha’s various Izakayas by Inoichi; Chouza tagged along as well, probably mostly for the food’s sake. That night Shikaku returned home totally wasted for the first time in his life of seventeen years, never even having had the chance to give a heads-up to his caretakers where he had been so late, and hardly even having the recollection of how he’d emptied the content of his stomach onto the porch of the Nara estate... and right in front of a pair of feet, which belonged to the stern-faced man, who had provided and raised that ‘disqualified’ boy under his roof, awaiting his return with arms crossed and shadows of displeasure dancing around his eyes! And even if Shikaku was again reminded of his failure when come morning he knelt scrubbing the porch extra clean while enduring a head-splitting hangover-headache, from there on alcohol and ‘benders with his best buddies’ became a constant companion to somehow keep his innate fears at bay – if only for a while. He made these frequent indulgences of disgrace up to his clan by putting even more secret effort into making a name for himself, flying through the Shinobi ranks in as much of an 4loof and unobtrusive way as possible, carefully drawing spotlight solely to the shadow he cast with his strategies until his every opinion and insight on a matter held weight enough to invariantly be considered by Council and Hokage and Daimyou alike. As Jonin Commander and head strategist advising the head of government from the shadows, he would certainly become ‘qualified’ as a Nara at long last, wouldn’t he? He remained doubtful and was only ever able to quiet down his dread for a while when he went drinking all night with Inoichi and Chouza, the only two people he trusted to carry him home afterwards without ever treating him as anything less than a human if he dared let down his guard a fraction. Because they already knew. But it still thieved his sleep at night, kept him inwardly tossing and turning in agony, while his body remained unmoving as if trapped in a paralysis of fright and his eyes tightly shut, pretending to be sound asleep. Thus he still needed his naps and brief reprieves during the day, sneaking them in whenever possible as he lounged about in the ready room. Due to his unchanged mindset, he was still pretty much afraid of everyone shunning him even if he had become more proficient in putting up all the appearances over the years, and especially the Kunoichi terrified him. So, expectedly, he was practically mortified when Yoshino entered his life with a force he couldn’t possibly sustain, mentally petrified by her every action and rendered defenceless by her every glance. For all he cared, she could sit on him to remind him of his rightful place as a lowlife-less-than-human, and he would not be able to object ever. How Yoshino captured him with the apparent effortlessness and grace of a grandmaster of Shougi catching a novice’s Jewelled General in a few elegant and efficient moves before they even knew the endgame was already over, remains a story to be told another time… But suffice to say, even though she expertly managed to hold his utterly unprepared heart captive without fail, and made him experience such a foreign fairytale as love firsthand for the first time, he still remained forever frightened of her. She was a strong and fierce woman like no other, he understood in amazement, yet she could be gentle as the sweet sun in spring at the same time – and she had figured him out as easily as if reading an open picture-book! “Listen to me, Shikaku,” she’d whispered to him one of these nights when they lay awake beneath the sheets, locking his face between her slender hands and forcing him to hold her gaze, “there’s nothing you have to be afraid of: you are the rightful head of the Nara clan now, I daresay your brilliant mind remains unparalleled by any Shinobi or Kunoichi in whole Hi no Kuni-- maybe even beyond--, you are thoughtful, careful and considerate in everything you do, your absence at any governmental meeting of importance in this country is unthinkable, –just as promised-- you make me the happiest wife I can possibly be, and I know you’ll be the best father ever once our son is born. Whoever has the faintest glimmer of doubt in you being anything but the living embodiment of what it means to be a Nara is but a blasted, ign0rant fool – so don’t you dare be one, dearest husband of mine! Remember, there is a third reading to your name, and it is more true than everything else.” She kissed the tip of his nose before she let go and snuggled closer, cushioning her head on his chest so she could listen to the thrumming of his quivering, trembling heart until she fell asleep. She was truly just as terrifying as she was terrific. That night he eventually was able to breathe a little easier, and finally, finally get at least some rest in the halls of this estate without him feeling like the burden of his name would come crashing down on him entirely. Yes, he was forever smitten with this incredible, enigmatic woman who he was honoured to call his wife! And when only a few years later he would notice the cautious glint in a pair of eyes peering up at him as if to determine the right course of action --so very much like his own regard when he’d looked at his father--, the realization struck him like lightning yet again: he was not the only Nara clan member who held these sorts of fears in their heart, burdened with an ingenious enough mind to be capable of imagining the most horrible outcomes and consequences to their every move, sh4ckled by the ac(umulated expectations placed on their frail shoulders by generations of outstanding personalities of the loyal and reliable shadows behind the Hokages of this village; and he was not the ‘alien’, the ‘unworthy’, the ‘failure’. Never had been. He swore then and there to himself, he would see to it personally that his son-- his beautifully ingenious little son!-- would never know the full extent of the terrors he himself had lived day in and day out throughout his life up to this point, that he would never feel the vicious seeds of self-doubt bear any poisonous fruit inside his fragile heart, and that he would never think of himself as being ‘disqualified’ as a Nara, much less a human being. (Even though he should still rightfully be terrified of all women and their capabilities, in his opinion!) He would teach him, in due time, even if that meant he would have to make the extra effort to step out of his relative comfort zone and brave the awkwardness of human interaction for him. For he was Nara Shikaku, qualified as a Nara. [2/2]

Christmas Event - Story Telling
"
UID:200000099141120; UK Server S363: Third Mizukage; In-Game Name: AsukaIshimaru Whenever I see Christmas decoration and festive food, or hear Christmas themed songs in shops around late October/ early November already, I just want to facepalm and release my entire soul with the deepest sigh ever, then bury myself at home in my writing and reading nook instead of exposing myself to this festive preparation madness, and only emerge again on the 1st of December. As my family and I are not really religious (the last person who actively went to church at Christmas Midnight Mass was my late grandmother), this is just too much of a fuzz for us. To quote Shikamaru: “How troublesome!” However, there are actually parts about the Christmas preparations and celebrations which I genuinely enjoy. But it is not until early December that I get started on them. Let me tell you about them! Over here people put up advent wreaths and light one candle on each of the four Sundays of Advent before Christmas. So buying four candles and decorating the advent wreath is one of the first things I do to get myself into Christmas mood. And it’s nice to have some sort of weekly ‘Christmas Countdown’ paired with the atmosphere of candlelight. This year I chose black and golden candles and added matching baubles of varying sizes to the wreath, then set the whole thing up on the dinner table. Looks fancy, but I like it! My husband likes sweets very much, so I set about preparing and filling an Advent Calendar for him next. Throughout December and up until the 24th he then can find some chocolate, candy or little messages from me behind its doors each day. Sometimes he would play random traditional Christmas songs on his guitar, but other than that we don’t really listen to Christmas themed music unless we have to. Making and/or finding presents for friends, neighbours and family takes more time and effort though, especially if I write stories or make some artworks to give. But I genuinely like thinking about the things they might enjoy and coming up with things to give them that hopefully make them smile. Wrapping them is not my forte, however, and some of the presents need to be sent by mail so they might receive them even if I can’t meet them in person. (Aside from the whole covid situation, I just can’t go travelling around the globe as much as I’d like to.) This is the second year in our new home, and also the second Christmas during the pandemic, so everything needs to be more quiet and careful. Thus huge family get-togethers like we used to attend are not an option. Instead, we’ll just have dinner with my parents at our home on Christmas Eve, and visit the in-laws on Christmas Day for lunch, then some online parties and gaming sessions with friends come Boxing Day. This is also the part I’m looking forward to the most: together with my mother I plan the menu for our Christmas dinner. Most people over here only have sausages and potato salad on Christmas Eve… but we don’t do that. We (both my parents, my husband and I) cook a full 4-5 course meal together on the 24th of December, then enjoy the feast together, and in between servings we exchange presents under the Christmas tree, and afterward play some parlor games when food coma ensues. This year I got my husband interested in joining the ‘baking spree’ as well after he saw me prepare food for the NO Christmas Group Events on discord, and he seems to have taken a liking to it, so we ended up having 8 kinds of cookies stuffed into cookie jars by now. (Luckily, they won’t last long, as they turned out really well.) Apropos of Christmas tree: usually around the 3rd weekend of Advent they sell trees on the village market square and the earnings go to charity, so we support that. Normally I’d go for a blue spruce, as they smell really nice and I don’t mind the needles being more prickly, but apparently this year was a bad year for growing spruces, so instead we bought a Nordmann fir, which-- sadly-- doesn’t smell at all but the needles are quite soft, so it’s easier to decorate. I still have a whole box with various baubles, fairly lights, garlands, candles and ribbons, which I inherited from my grandparents, but I also add bits and bobs to the decoration repertoire every now and then. Decorating the tree usually is my ultimate preparation for the celebrations to come and the last step I take before the get-together. And then there are the NO community events, here on the forum and on discord, which help get me into Christmas mood as well – and get me to connect and make friends with more people playing this game outside of my server cluster, which is nice and fun, but also keeps me even more busy th4n usual. Thank you, everyone! It’s been a blast! So, I guess, this year is kind of special in many ways… Anyway, I hope you enjoy the holidays, and see you next year!

Naruto's Christmas Event!
"
Same Procedure as Every Year (499 words) by UID:200000099141120; UK Server S363: Third Mizukage; In-Game Name: AsukaIshimaru Gently, slowly they came drifting down as he threw a look up at the cloudy skies above the hoarfrost-coated treetops of the Konoha Forest. The snow from last night had already settled in and powdered the Fire Country in a white wintry blanket, but the flakes still kept falling as he trudged on even deeper into the forest. The air was cold but clear. “It’s that time of the year again, huh?” he murmured listlessly and sighed deeply, exhaling the smoke of his cigarette, which froze in the air along with his breath. “How troublesome.” Shikamaru still remembered how every year on Christmas Eve his late father would head out into the very part of the snow-covered forest which was guarded by his clan, dragging a sleigh laden with a bulky sack and other equipment to tend to the deer behind him, then return to Konoha proper for the main event once the preparations were done… But with his father resting in his cold grave, it was Shikamaru’s turn to do the troublesome deed from now on. And his trusty nin deer Rikumaro was already waiting on him with a few others of the herd; he knew as well, it was time. “How troublesome, indeed,” Shikamaru sighed again, snuffed out his cigarette, then approached the stag and gently rubbed its muzzle. “Let’s get ready, shall we?” First he set up the salty deerlick stones and refilled the mangers with plenty hay. And as the deer feasted on the hay, he pulled out a soft brush to comb them down nicely and thoroughly until their fur was shiny and fluffy, then set about bridling them. Small bells fastened to the headcollars chimed and jingled whenever they sh00k their heads as he proceeded to put the nin deer in front of the sleigh, Rikumaro-- of course-- leading the team. But Shikamaru was not done yet. “How troublesome,” he kept mumbling as he rummaged inside the sack on the sleigh, then hurried to change into the things he had brought. “To think Dad had gone through this very trouble every year! So cold! Brr,” he complained to no one in particular, chattering his teeth. Rikumaro soothingly nudged him with his his muzzle, always so apprehensive of his master’s moods and thoughts. “I know, I know. It’s for the King’s sake after all… so I’ll do it, even if it’s troublesome. What wouldn’t I do to see them smile, right?” Shikamaru sighed again once everything was in place, then boarded the sleigh and pulled gently on the reigns. “Let’s go!” The deer set in motion, snow quietly crunching under their hooves, bells chiming with every step on their way back into the village and through the streets decorated with baubles, garlands and fairy lights. The crowd already awaited his arrival, smiles and happily gleaming eyes beaming at him everywhere. And although he felt awkward, he raised his hand and waved at them, clearing his throat he exclaimed: “Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas, everyone!”

I totally agree with that pairing. Maybe you should read my fanfiction 'The Summer Festival' as there are hints at that pairing in there, too. :)

Not bad. It's so nice to see them all fight together against common enemies. But this is only the beginning of what could be a greater story. So please continue writing! I want to know how it ends. :)

Names for the Mains

Let's agree to disagree then. :) While ingame I find it quite sufficient to call them their class, as each player is able to name them the way they want, I just feel different when it comes to fanfiction. Maybe I'm the only one who thinks like that. But what if I'm not? This is my solution to the 'problem', and nothing but only a suggestion. :)
