This will always occur whenever there is a message that gets truncated right before a name is supposed to appear. As shown in the example image, this is a case where a Star Wheel message is getting cut-off right before the name. I have seen it for other types on messages such as someone coming on or offline. An observation I have made is that these always appear to occur from the activities of a person named S329-JBone's. The only thing that appears different between their name and others is single apostrophe in the name. I speculate that it may be a character used as a part of the link formatting as it makes the text around it look like link text.
