Note at the bottom (forgot to type this in)2nd Note at the bottom (prompt vs non prompt)

There seems to be a abundance of high combo guides/questions about team building so I decided to share a more rounded approach to team building. These are the 10 questions in order that form my decision making process.

A sample team is shown in the following post.
1. What is the main focus of the team?
Damage? Survivability? Control? Combo?(think deidara and his reliance on a specific mechanic). Pick one

Keep in mind the usage of this team: Arena? Ranked? Ninja Exam? Instance? Great Ninja War? Nine Tails?
eg. Nine Tails : focus solely on damage and high combo (10 hits skills) skills or damage buffing skills (anko for fire, sasuke for lightning, guy, iruka)

2. How do I fulfill the above condition?
Damage : DOTs (damage over time)? Area Damage? Single Target Damage? Combo chain oriented? Ability Oriented?

Survivability :Control immunity? Burst Healing? Sustained Healing? Debuff Cleansing? Tanks?

Control : Immobile? Sleep? Chaos? Interrupts? Acupuncture? Blindness? Paralyze?

Combo: Mostly for unique characters that rely on a specific mechanic eg. Deidara and his reliance on Ignition
You will usually end up with 1-2 choices from the above list.

3. Who is the main ninja in this Team? (non-Main character)
Essentially the ninja you want to keep alive at all cost. Pick one ninja
Eg. Deidara for combo oriented teams. Shikamaru for immobile CC (crowd control) teams or Kakashi for burst damage teams

4. How will my Main Character support the main ninja?
Talent choices and summon choices etc.

5. Redundancy? What's my back up plan?
Pick one ninja if possible.
Essentially boils down to two styles :
-A direct substitute for the main ninja
eg. For healing focused teams, pick another healer
-An additional support for the main ninja
eg. Shizune to boost the main healer or Shizune to boost DOT area damage focused teams
eg. Additional source of repulse for Hinata to perform her acupuncture chase

6. What are my current weaknesses?
based on the above choices, you should have a rough idea of what you are lacking

eg. Survivability teams tend to lack damage
eg. Combo oriented teams like Deidara are susceptible to crowd control or burst damage

7. What is my secondary focus?
Pick one focus that complements your main focus based on your weakness. (Damage , control, survivability, combo)

8. How do I fulfill the above focus?
based on the three ninjas you picked earlier, you should be able to have a picture of what chase, passive and mystery skills your current team possess.
based on the various conditions (eg. Low Float, High Float, Acupuncture etc.), pick the last ninja

eg. Adding Karin into a team of Kakashi, Hinata, and Fire main to fill the healer role while at the same time filling up the gap between Knockdown and High Float.
eg. Adding Hinata into a team of Deidara, Naruto (tailed) and Fire main to add CC elements into the team while making use of Naruto's guranteed repulse

9. Positioning?
Stuff to keep in mind:
Turn order: eg. Would you rather your healer to heal you at the end of the turn?mid? or beginning? This is especially important for debuff cleansing
eg. Interrupts would benefit from a better turn order
Formation: Do I keep 3 in a row or spread into rows of 2?
eg. keeping 3 ninjas in a row allows you focus your standard attacks on a target easier
How will my summons be summoned? (if any)
eg. The AI favours its own row first before moving to the next row. You can position your summon in front to tank or keep it in a safe spot for dps (refer to pictures below)
Summons kept for DPS (shaded areas)

Summons used as a Tank for Guy

10. Gear and Stats?
This mostly applies if your magatama and equipment upgrades aren't evenly spread out.
A VERY IMPORTANT THING to take note of is the stats screen which gives a detailed breakdown of HP, defense, attack and resistance etc. Readjust your positioning and choices accordingly. If you are wondering why your ninja is getting murdered , that is probably why.

Stats screen

This guide should allow you to build a team that would win a majority of the time barring hard counters and large gear differences. Thanks for reading and have fun.

NOTE: I forgot to add this into 9.Positioning

Turn order also affects your combo order. The system will choose in turn order when there are 2 chase skills chasing the same combo move. eg

The 3 ninjas I am pointing at all have Chase Skill: Chase High Float and attack ...
Any action that causes High Float will always trigger their chase skills in the order of:

Kakashi -〉Fire Main -〉 Guy
turn 1 turn 3 turn 4 (Move 4 if you like this style)
This applies even if Fire Main is the one casting the High Float source

Hinata does not chase High Float so it is skipped.

Make sure to position your ninjas such that they do not interfere with each other eg. having two Chase Repulse might end up blocking Hinata's Acupuncture depending on the ordering.

PS. Get naruto to 3 stars, he is pretty useful for higher level ninja exams due to his clones

2nd NOTE: Prompt vs Non-Prompt Skills

Prompt skills : higher priority initiative-wise compared to non-prompt skills
castable regardless of turn(move) order within the round
eg.

Hinata is able to cast during Sai's turn(move) and during Guy's turn.

Skills that trigger before an action and also triggers twice a round will trigger a second time off a prompt skill.Absorption of Debuffs will happen once before this ninja attacks and if I use his mystery skill, Absorption of Debuffs will trigger again before the skill is cast. Useful when you want to time your debuff cleansing or passive healing from ninjas like Tsunade or Karin

Non-prompt skills : castable only BEFORE the ninja's attack phase. You can click on the skill and it will consume the chakra and get queued up but it won't fire till the phase before said ninja's attack phase. Casting a non-prompt skill consumes the entire turn of the ninja. ( The ninja is unable to attack after casting it but is still able to combo)

Decided to give a sample team just for completion sake. Refer to above guide

Team is made up of Hinata , Guy, Fire main, Sai

1. Focus : Control (CC)

2. Method : Acupuncture , Interrupt

3. Main Ninja Pick : HinataCombos with herself and acupuncture combos pretty easily. Great Tanking skill in the form of her mystery skill 64 palms.

4. Main Character Talents :

Main Reason: Fire Dragon to induce High float and celestial prison to induce Repulse.
I chose flame jutsu as my standard attack for its high combo count and for the fact that it does not miss. Genjutsu mirror because why not? Reflects CC and boosts damage to characters under ignition. My summon just attacks 2 bodies when my combo count hits 10 just to eke out some dps.

Fire Dragon helps to remove those pesky clones and summons so I highly recommend this regardless of cir*stance.

I did not choose a combo chain oriented summon as I wanted to use the chameleon in ranked battle and was too lazy to swap it out... but you can add in this summon if you want more combo chains.

Ninja cat works pretty well too.

5. Redundant repulse sources : 2nd Ninja Pick: Guy
Main reason: Repulse on a 20 chakra prompt skill with interrupt built in. You really cannot ask for much more with regards to this team. Prompt pretty much gurantees you will get the acupuncture in before the enemy casts his skill.

He buffs the taijutsu attack of the whole team and gives them life leech effect on their standard attack. On top of that, he hits real hard too. Perfect addition due to his boost to your damage and survivability.

6. Lack of survivability : no heals/cleanse and only a single tank with no hard control like immobile

7. Secondary Focus : DamageI decided on damage focused ninjas instead of cleansing ninjas like Pain-Jigokudo or Tsunade because I foresee the main problem being debuffs in the form of Lightning Main's paralyze or acupuncture of hinata shutting down my control theme. The best way to counter this is just to kill them faster and seal them first instead of trying to cleanse away the debuffs as those problems tend to last over a few rounds and it is hard to constantly cleanse them. Adding a tank would hamper Guy because of the turn order and adding additional CC just makes this team especially vulnerable to teams with consistent cleansing abilities

8. Last Ninja Pick: Sai
Main reason: 0 chakra Mystery Skill that summons two beasts that deal high damage on their own but also gurantees High Float if both are alive. This combos with Guy and also fills in a tanking role by soaking standard hits and debuffs/skills.

He significantly boosts the survivability of the team as a whole while providing support for guy and by extension the main ninja Hinata.

9. Positioning

Hinata on the front row because of her mystery skill that lets her evade standard attacks.
Guy as position 1 or 2 because of his interrupt. I kept Guy as position 2 in the second column so that Sai's Beast will tank for him.
Fire main as 3rd to increase the initiative order of Fire dragon.

10. Gear and Equipment

Mostly evenly spread out.

Mostly use that team for instances, arena and random events. Feel free to share your team comps below and let me know if you want to see other sample teams for other events eg. Nine Tails etc.

Untested Builds:
Poison/Fire burst + some CC

Works without the Cat but it is recommended

Dragon Flame High-> Fire Main chase -> Sasuke Low float to repulse -> Asuma Repulse to knockdown and blind -> Karin Knockdown to High float -> Sasuke High float to low float and paralysis.

Knockdown (Asuma or Sasuke skill) -> Karin Knockdown to High float -> Fire Main high float to low float and ignition -> sasuke low float to repulse -> Asuma repulse to knockdown and blindness.

Asuma ( combo standard attack) repulse -> Asuma repulse to knockdown and blindness -> Karin Knockdown to High float -> Fire Main high float to low float and ignition -> sasuke low float to repulse -> Ninja Cat repulse to high float -> Sasuke High float to low float and paralysis.

2 10-hit combos: karin -> poison two enemies
Sasuke ->ignite two enemies

Death Mirage to proc Asuma wind blade faster (does a lot of burst)
Two forms of CC : paralyze +blindness
Aoe Damage in the form of ignite+poison
Minor heal from karin

please show samples for exams and nine tails event and ranked for wind. I know of the empress build but trying to find a temporary build in the mean time is proving difficult. I read that Win main is balanced, so i am not entirely sure how to use her. I am Currently running Gaara, Main,, Baki, kabuto for survival and combos, but combos don't seem to be doing high damage for exams (especially with Meds w/ Reincarnaion skill) and the match drags out too long because of kabuto.
Regarding ranked, well Light Mains Skill always cancels mine regardless of position of my main - since main is prioritised by auto. Thus, losing to players with kakashi burst builds that are weaker than me. I have refined for high initiative, but its still happening.

Please, any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks

= = I can't help you with ranked since I'm not playing wind and you are going to have to give me information about your team/gear even if I was. There isn't a magical one team fits all for ranked when there are so many variables like gear differences and different team builds.

For nine tails, Tonton works fine in place of chameleon.

Bring Baki along but not Gaara since his attacks are weak unless you think his buff adds enough damage that it will make up for bringing along a higher dps ninja. I suggest Sai as his summons deal a lot of damage and Iruka for his 10 hit combo crit and damage buff.

Place Sai , Main , Baki on the back row and Iruka in front of your main. Summon Sai's Beasts only after nine tail swipes you on his first round. If you have Guy, I rather Guy over Baki.

Sai x x
Main Iruka x
Baki x x

If you do not have Sai / Iruka, you can try replacing them with Naruto 3 star and Gaara.

As for your ninja exam issue, kabuto has crap damage and gaara is mostly a tank. There is no way you are going to win without a power difference. High combo means the team is efficient but it does not mean there will be high dps.
Try adding in Sasuke or for ignite and Hinata to prevent resurrection and keep kabuto if you think you need his clones for survival.

or kakashi sai hinata, giant rasengan for hinata combos

or kakashi shikamaru and neji with giant rasengan as your mystery with rasengan as your chase.

Try to aim for the anbu medical ninja (I think that is what they are called). You really need burst why do you think there are so many kakashi builds? (aside from money issues). If you have issues with the enemy's Kabuto, use neji or hinata or some form of interrupt . You really need some form of ignite or you cannot burst down Kabuto since he heals himself for twice as much. This post was last edited by catnipaddict at 2016-8-2 16:12

Hey Cat, i have an issue regarding Pain - Ningendo and how can i build him in a wind team...i was thinking about kurenai and hinata because they work really fine with him ( i want to build a team around pain - ningendo because his chase does immobile which i didnt know of untill i tested it , 2x immobile is pretty good imo and i was thinking about this talents : 2/3/2/1/3 (blindness) ) pain move1,main move2,hinata move3 (all in 1 line),kurenai move4(behind hinata). i know hinata is a good tank but because of her passive i decided to put her 1st line, she tanks 1st row of abilities then next round i do pain on character that uses mystery then main rasengan on someone that uses mystery to proc hinata accupuncture then pretty much is a win. Do you think this can work?

Been some time since I since I saw this post lol and I've changed my mind regarding what's the better meta at the moment. Btw, you didn't list your summon. I can't really tell if the whole team works together in terms of combo.

Firstly, the logic behind the team works out as a heavy CC team. However, depending on the power level you are competing with, this might fall short due to the heavy reliance on status and lack of dps. Since you are asking about pains, I'll assume 16k++ power.

Anyway with regards to your team, do you have another semi-tank? Animal path? Hinata is not really required for your team and with 3 ninjas in the a column, you can't really say she is tanking. Ningendo is pretty much a stronger CC version of Hinata so you really do not need Hinata for more CC.

Try clones as your third passive instead of the blind. The blind does not work well against cleanses/ clones that have special attacks. I prefer the 10 combo chase skill but this depends a lot on the summon you use. Your DPS does not seem too high so I really suggest swapping out Hinata but I am not sure what ninjas you have or which summon you possess.

As for why I am suggesting that you remove Hinata, your team seems to lean too heavily towards CC at the expense of dps. Hinata and Kurenai aren't exactly the best DPS choices. I strongly prefer assassination style of combos where you aim to kill someone off by the 2nd turn.

There are a lot of Tobis right now so what does this mean for you? : hard to use mysteries on him, really high single target damage by a fire ninja on your wind main. Even if you manage to cc him, he has 1 chance to break out of cc with his revive. Essentially, it is hard to play the stalling game with him which is essentially what a heavy CC team like yours require.

There are going to be more and more Pains/ Tsunades within the 16k+ bracket so trying to CC others will just get progressively harder. You just cannot CC a team with Gakido if the player isn't *.

So overall for PVP, I feel you should add in more burst to round out your team even if it means giving up CC. By the 2nd turn, someone should be almost dead or dead by the end of the turn. Of course, all this is is assuming you are competing with the top bracket. Especially with the top few, burst is the dominant theme at least for my server. PS. depending on your summon, it might work out. ( golden rhino is pretty good).

As an ARENA team, it will work pretty well since things tend to live longer so win/loss would be more a matter of your skill than anything. For SURVIVAL trial, it should work REALLY well assuming you did the math right on your combos and use clones. (The AI is pretty * after all and immobile should shut down the AI's combos)
