This isn't to start a flame war, the title was used to draw people in to spark a discussion.
I first started watching Naruto with my older brother (who's a bit of a weaboo) several years before it was released in NA (2002/2003 to be exact) and out of boredom I have been rewatching some of the earlier episodes and I have to say....
this show was never "that" good.
Here are my top gripes.
We Were Cheated Out Of A Legitimate Ninja Story: The thing that made the Wave Arc extremely interesting and the overall story accessible was the fact that we got to see a bit of the world of Naruto and what it meant to be a ninja. We saw through the main character's eyes how quickly things could spiral out of control, and how your comrades could 'die' right before your very eyes. It showed that being a ninja meant making the tough calls and the tough decisions. And it meant getting your hands dirty and possibly killing your enemies.
Honestly if it were up to me, I would had made Naruto kill Haku in response to what he did to Sasuke (this means that Kakashi would finish Zabuza with his Chidori as well). Then when Sasuke is found to be alive, Naruto goes into a bit of a depression stage where he feels guilty for killing Haku in cold-blood for seemingly 'no reason', but then Kakashi tells him that he performed his ninja duty, and that "this is what it means to be a shinobi."
Instead what happened at the Land of the Waves is seemingly brushed off, and down the road the main cast never embarked on a mission like that again. In fact, they went right back to doing D-ranked missions after already proving that they could complete a B-ranked mission. After their success they should had been given a couple more C-ranked missions, one that involved *ing or fighting off bandits and common thugs.
All in all I felt that we were cheated from seeing a legitimate story about ninjas because nobody did anything very ninja-esque at all. No traveling to different countries/villages to learn about their culture and history and heritage, or learning new jutsu and training on the road or encountering more enemy ninja, none of that.
The Main Characters Were Too UP/OP: Following the Land Of The Waves arc and into the Chunin exams, one of my main gripes was that the main cast were so far behind everyone else that it was ridiculous. For instance, you would had thought that the difference in strength between Naruto/Sasuke vs Rock Lee was like a two academy students up against an experienced Jonin.
They were completely man-handled and it made no sense. Haku was a 15 year-old trained killer with a kekkai genkai so him abusing Naruto and Sasuke simultaneously was not that big of a stretch. But Lee's movements being "too fast" for Sasuke to react to even with his Sharingan and the fact that he was just taught how to channel chakra through his feet to enhance his speed demonstrated by how he kept up with Haku's movements made absolutely no sense whatsoever. There is no way that Lee without his weights off was that much faster than Haku. It makes no sense. The fight between Sasuke and Lee should have ended with a stalemate (Guy breaking it up before Lee initiates the Shadow Dance) and that would had been the end of it before either side revealed too much. Sasuke could had still copied some of Lee's moves for his fight in the Chunin Exams (such as the Leaf Hurricane that he did against Naruto) or just his taijutsu style in general.
The next part to this point is Naruto vs Kiba. Now aside from the fact that Naruto had to fart his way to a win, there was no reason for Kiba to had been so far ahead of him in terms of strength, speed, and taijutsu ability as a whole. They made it seem as if Kiba was one of the strongest genins of that class, in fact, he displayed a level of skill that would put him ahead of everyone save for the obvious (Neji, Lee, and Shino). If Sasuke was matched against him in his weakened state he wouldn't have had a chance.
They should had either downplayed Kiba some or given the fact that Naruto was trained to channel his chakra to his feet as well, should had been able to keep up with Kiba much more than was actually shown. Naruto got completely destroyed all throughout the fight, but aside from obvious plot armor (like getting hit by Kiba's Gatsuga and getting up as if nothing happened) there was nothing credible about Naruto's win except for the fact that he was Naruto. He literally only won the fight because he was the titular character and that is extremely poor writing and handling of the character.
Now to the over-powered part. This mainly focuses on the Naruto vs Gaara fight. That caliber of fight should not have happened, like at all. These are two genins displaying skills and destructive power on a scale that nearly rivaled that of Hiruzen vs Orochimaru. Gaara had an excuse in the fact that he was given the power at birth, and I know Naruto has the Kyuubi as well, but the fact that he learned to summon Gamabunta at such an early age seemed extremely out of place.
Learning that along with Rasengan and his ability to manipulate the Kyuubi's chakra seemingly at will instantly put Naruto so far ahead of any other Genin that it's ridiculous. So while Neji and Lee and Kiba and Hinata are out "training" and rebuilding the village, Naruto is fighting (and defeating) Jounin-level shinobi like Kabuto. I think things got completely out of hand at that point, especially him mastering Rasengan in what, a week? It took Minato (the most talented shinobi in the history of the village) three years to do it, and Naruto isn't supposed to have anywhere near the talent Minato did since that's who he is. Naruto didn't have to work hard for anything anymore, all he had to do was Kage Bushin, Rasengan, or Kyuubi.
That's all he had going for him and I think that the spirit of the show was somewhat lost at that point as things became more about the bigger, more powerful jutsu and less about utilizing stealth, espionage, tactics, and "silent killing" (you know, like what ninjas are supposed to do) in order to win. Offensive ninjutsu should be a last resort when you're backed into a corner and you have to defend yourself, everything shouldn't turn into a 1-on-1 no holds barred brawl fest. Ninjas don't do that.
And don't get me started on Sasuke gaining Lee's speed in a month (if it was that easy why wasn't he always that fast) the Cursed Mark (which makes no sense as one moment when he's incapacitated in the forest of death, it activates and gives him immense power while in the next moment it brings him pain and makes him immobile), the seemingly limitless and never clearly defined power of the Sharingan, and when he somehow summoned Manda to save him against Deidara when his chakra reserves were already wiped? I'm going to need an explanation for that.
I could go on but I'll leave it alone for now and await responses. Remember, this topic is to generate an honest discussion/evaluation on the series, this is not flame bait.
