1＃ Go To1. why can't I remove the main character from the team? is this temporary or just how it works?
2. in the recruit/treasure/summon/whatever it's called screen, there are only 2 banners ('treasures'? what is it called). it says "this treasure no longer has a special deal for newcomers" and suggests I draw on higher level treasures, but there are no higher level treasures. is this just because my level is too low?
3. is this game pvp focused or can I just pve?
4. do I need a good team for story or can I just do whatever I want, not too interested in pvp or big events (at least for now)
try to not use any fancy game terms because I'm new and I have 0 clue what I'm doing

1. That is how the game works. Only certain modes (Fighting Matsuri Challenge, Theme Arena - no main mode, as examples) allow for no main.
2. Yes, your level is too low. More treasures unlock at higher levels.
3. You can PVE only but PVP is a large portion of the game.
4. You are able to use any team that works for story. PVP has a me
ta so not just any team works there. Recommend the official discord for quick help and tips.

I'll be honest here man, don't even think about PVP unless you are prepared to pour money in this game like no ones business :) as F2P i can tell you that its impossible to actually compete at any higher level in PVP or any bigger PVP events because you just cant keep up with new me
ta ninjas witch costs hundreds of dollars and you power will never be as high as of those who spend thousands of dollars for power and so on. Just try to have fun as much as you can. -

Unless you are willing to pour money into this game in amount that would let you buy several royal estates, forget about PvP. There are literally two PvP events you can consider: Arena for dailies and Training grounds.
Level up your character, make alt account, level it up around same level and use it for standard Arena practice battles for daily quest and theme arena when it appears. Use it also for key farming in training grounds.
The rest PvP events (Sage, Matsuri) - forget they exist. Saves you a lot of frustration.
Oh, and never ever ever ever let yourself believe that you can achieve anything significant in this game as F2P. You can't. Powerful characters are strongly locked behind paywalls and if they are ever released for F2P it only means they are obsolete. There is no amount of playing and time poured into this game that let you even sniff chances against heavy payers. It may be different on China servers (never played, so dunno), but on west Publisher made * sure F2P peasants can't measure even slightly to whale master race.
It used to be maybe not different, but not that bad either, but that's long gone. -
