how do you get items for spending in mystery shop. I never been able to figure it out

The Mysterious Shop inside the Groceries Storage Room? If so, those are Strange Rocks and the only way to get them are by hitting the limit/cap of Sun/Moon Scrolls for the week. You can check how close you are to this by opening the Daily Practice screen and it'll be shown on the bottom, like so: SoLEkKDqxi
