Hello!
It is indeed that if you make your name too long or include special characters in it, you won't be able to do some of the game features such as making a team and such. On the other hand, if you have no resources to change your name in the meantime, you may choose to edit the team name first before proceeding. Removing the special characters or shortening the team name will be able to let you create a team though personal messages isn't gonna get fixed with this. Thank you.

wouldnt it make more sence to just... limit the name choices to make sure it works with the game?

limit the name choices to only alphanumeric letters by coding it into the game ? makes some sense yea,
on the other hand people have more freedom adding special char in their name right now, it's not a minus point imo,
we however just need to remember that the key identifiers should have alphanumeric, then all is well.
