Any recommendations for ninjas a f2p player can get would also be appreciated.

First of all, you should run your main as position one, till you get some more power and acquire some more ninjas.
You can try the following lineups :


A solid team, you got some buffs, some leeches. Normally this team works better with the Fukurokumaru Summon.Root of warrior giving your Kimimaro, Main and Sasuke a 100% resistance buff and immunity, which are really nice. Kimimaro is going to block attacks, plus get more tanky and with the leech, this team works in general good at the start.

The same team works with Hinata instead, but there is another passive required ,, Bloodthirsty Demon'' instead.

When you acquire Kurenai you can try the following lineup :

You got some decent buffs here, a reflection, heal and shield from Kurenai which are also super solid. In general a good team.

I'm suggesting you once you collect about 800-900 coupons to buy Iruka from the ,, Treasure of the Sage event'' . He will help you really a lot in general. His buffs are really good and he will always be useful. You can add Iruka basically in any team at the start, he is great.
