A Cat's Night Out
A cool summer night in Konoha, perfect for a bonfire. If he was being honest Fukurokumaro had never been to a bonfire before. In fact, for some strange reason he didn’t get invited to many parties. But tonight was the anniversary and everyone was welcome. He could smell the barbeque and his stomach rumbled, he would address his hunger later. He didn’t want to miss the ignition. He scampered towards the excitement, his bells ringing with each step. A large circle of bodies crowded around a stack of logs, he had to jump just to see. A woman with a large fan and a well-dressed young man inspected the logs. A deep voice announced that the lighting would take place in one minute.
He had to get closer, this view was unacceptable: “Excuse me, pardon me.” he said, but his pleas fell upon deaf ears. He tried to squeeze through but the people were so densely packed that he didn’t advance an inch. The announcer began the countdown from ten. Everyone got on the tiptoes to try to catch a glimpse. He couldn’t see at all. Fukurokumaro was a cat of action, and a human wall was not going to stop him from seeing the anniversary bonfire. He jogged back a few feet to increase his momentum, lowered his head and charged full speed at the crowd. He used his large coin as a battering ram sending people flying as he tore through the crowd. His plan was perfect nothing could stop him from attaining his goal. “Two, One, IGNITION” proclaimed the announcer. “This is it!” he thought as he plowed through the final row of onlookers.
The well-dressed young man leapt into the air and took a deep breath. It was at this moment that Fukurokumaro realized the fatal flaw in his plan. He had so much momentum that he simply couldn’t stop. Time slowed, the young lady reared back with that enormous fan. The boy spewed blazing flames while the girl fed them a feast of oxygen. They combined into an explosion of heat. In that frozen moment Fukurokumaro appreciated the surreal beauty of the moment. Then it ended. He ran full bore into the bonfire. Every sense ceased to function all that existed was white-hot pain. Momentum, his old foe became his friend as he erupted from the other side of the fire. The crowd gasped as a giant fireball streaked toward the crowd. They gladly made way. The pain caused him to panic and he ran in circles until a little girl drenched him in heavenly water. She giggled and said “your funny” then walked back to her friends. He didn’t feel funny. He smelled barbecued meat even more powerfully now, but he was no longer hungry.
