I've played a bit today in arena with Yugito Nii, Roshi, Azure fang, Bee sst lineup, with 4th chase selected (water style - water trumphet) and i've noticed something weird.
By using Bee's mystery on Yugito Nii i was sure to reach 10 combos with her two standard attacks and so to trigger the whole chases.
What happened sometimes was the following thing: yugito hits the enemy with 12-20 hits combo, then triggers water style water trumphet that brings the counter to 22-30, then triggers yugito nii chase that brings the counter to 42-50, but at that point not always Roshi's chase triggered even if the counter was way over 30.
How can this be explained if there was no died enemy during the process?
combo can be broken by death or dodge, including death of summon/clone.

You'd need to at least take a screenshot of the enemy team thou
I think he said the counter hit every time 42 at least after yugito nii chase applied and yugito hits 4 targets, if there's no dead enemy even if some of them avoided the 40+ requirement was reached, so the 30 chase should be triggered regardless, no? Otherwise the number 40 shouldn't appear.
I mean, lets say he fought minato, masked man + other two and that yugito hitted twice with the lowest combo, 6, so he hit 12 and azure fang triggered. If he didn't hit neither minato or masked man the counter reached 22 and then yugito chase procced, but even if was avoided twice, for two times would still have hit, so the 32 was reached. If instead main chase was avoided also yugito chase wouldn't have triggered. At the point yugito triggers is hard for roshi to not follow too.
There is no "main chase" on high combo, all of them have to hit for it to continue.
I know this from fox ambush, which have tons of high combo. In turn 1, my combo always gets interrupted as one of the target is the masked man, despite the other targets are hit. ALWAYS.
Also, high combo chase targets random enemy, so it's even possible for the previous "main chase" to not be hit at all by a later chase (i.e. yugito could have performed attack non Ninja A while water main combo onto B and C. And, if you had a tenten in there, tenten might hit A and D)

ah now i get it, so the the same target has to be hit constantly

No, it doesn't.
But because it doesn't, it might hit a new target which is capable of dodging (which was not hit previously, which allowed the combo to continue earlier), and the dodge will break the combo

It doesn't have to be the same target. Combos occur when multiple hits are made by your team without being interrupted by something else. So if the opponent attacks, dodges, gets off a mystery even it it doesn't hit you, the combo counter resets. Combo chases don't always hit but most of the time they do if you get the combo needed as long as you haven't hit the combo chase already. Unless it lets you chase more than once for some reason. (I don't think anyone does yet, but maybe in the future.) Knowing initiative and action order is important when going for the higher combos like Roshi. Unless you can for sure get off 30 with just automatic chases.
