You make some good points. You are right that the motives are different, one trying to be noticed the other wanting revenge. Almost a good vs. evil setup, but imo that was for the Uchia vs. Senju plotline.
However they did both act without thinking later in the series, take the nearest explanations as fact (or not even listen to them ) and use that information to make quick and rash decisions that ultimately affected the whole ninja world. Those are the parts I'm using to say they were similar. In the beginning, Sauske 'uses his head' more, is, uh.. smarter about things. ;P We're told of his genius and everything. (Shikamaru aside) Then he follows this road of seemingly not postulating those exact theories he would have before, or at least, only using his genius in battles. He was able to see manipulations before then somehow seems to fall into one manipulation after another. Not knowing who to trust yet acting as though trusting near everything he's told at one point or another. Also, he seems to be the only leaf villager to not have any realizations about 'not being a kid anymore'. Idk if that was intentional or not. Possibly. If there is reasoning, I don't personally think it's well established in the storyline like the other characters. This leads me to see someone still childish in their view, reasoning, gullibility. Where did the genius Sauske go? Or, is this supposed to be the effects of the eyes' power?
Hmmm... interesting read! I liked it, thank you!
I think the mistake theory is also plausible, because if Sauske was *ing to his original personality, he would have taken Itachi's lead, right? And put the village over all? Not think of himself as 'more special than the village'. (hence the spoiled brat line lol) He literally said he was more important.
