“You- You…!” Midnight was shaking with a combination of indignation, rage, and embarrassment. Scarlet must have sent a clone ahead and followed him from behind.
“You’ll never beat me, traitor! How did you even know I was there!?” He charged. Scarlet snorted derisively.
“You thought I wouldn’t notice you trying to cover that shiny white mop?” Scarlet dodged every attack, dancing out of reach of every * excepting one that merely grazed the tips of his hair. A few strands drifted to the ground. Scarlet gasped.
“My lustrous, fragranced hair! You’ll pay for that, you colourless pansy!” Midnight halted his onslaught of attacks for a moment to catch his breath.
“Just try it! Your hair looks * anyways! And-… AND… You’re really short!”
“Entitled fiend! You’ll pay for having good genes!”
Midnight’s sword came down again, but this time it was met with metal. A resounding clang s* their bones.
Scarlet flung the larger blade aside with his kunai, before swinging a leg up and kicking Midnight in the chest, using it as a springboard to flip into the air. At the peak of his arc, he twisted, hurling a handful of shuriken at his foe. Winded, the lightning nin barely managed to dive out of the way. The shuriken sparked uselessly off the rooftop, and Scarlet landed neatly in front of Midnight.
“Give up yet?” The raven haired boy smirked down at him, hands in his pockets.
“…Hardly.” Temporarily abandoning his sword, he lunged at the other boy.
“Raiton: Thunde-!”
“Red lotus Seal!”
“SCREW YOU.”
“Love ya too, bro!” Scarlet winked, *ing Midnight a kiss.
‘He’s just toying with me!’ Midnight realised, as he stood there, basically paralyzed. It wouldn’t last too long, but if Scarlet had been really trying to kill him, he’d already be dead by now. And here he was supposed to be a prodigy! His father would have killed him for getting so careless, if he were there.
Okay, the first step was to take deep breaths, and calm down a little. He had wasted far too much energy in useless swings. Since Scarlet seemed to be mostly defensive at the moment, it seemed unlikely that he would attack. Midnight couldn’t move anyway, may as well use the time.
Next, assess surroundings. Where was his sword? There, five feet to his left. Target? Standing about 10 feet in front of him, slightly to the right, watching him interestedly. Waiting for his next move. Surrounding objects? They were on one of the ubiquitous gently sloping orange roofs of Konoha. The occasional chimney, nothing he could use. But maybe he could make something.
“We don’t have all day, Blade-san. Evil needs sleep, too!” he said mockingly, though Midnight could see the subtle flash in his eyes. *! It hadn’t even been that long! But fine. He’d give the double agent * what he wanted.
“Kage Bunshin no Jutsu!” A clone appeared on Scarlet’s other side. He snorted.
“A clone? How cliche…” Scarlet’s eyes narrowed in confusion.
The two Midnights had started running in a tight circle around their foe, whirling faster and faster until they were only lightning blue blurs. Sparks popped all around him. A sheen of brilliant light glowed from the Midnights, and something told Scarlet that if he tried to tackle one of them he’d definitely get electrocuted.
“You look like a kitten chasing its tail, ehehe...”
‘…I should probably get out of here before I die,’ Scarlet thought, looking in the only direction available- up. Wait, scratch that. There was some kind of electric force field enclosing him in the ring, peaking in the very center. The Midnights very suddenly came to a halt, whipping out their swords and crossing them with a clang. The ring and force field remained in place.
‘Crosshairs…’ Scarlet realised, ‘Well, not really, but it’s something to help him aim…’
“Midnight Blade Special Technique: Lightning Annulus!”
It was at this moment Scarlet knew… he ****ed up.
The burnt fire nin slowly toppled onto the rooftop, a choked cough leaving his throat. Midnight slowly staggered to his enemy, breathing heavily.
“Chidori!” Blue energy crackled along his raised blade, the chirping of songbirds filled the cool, soothing night air. His knees buckled with exertion, but he doggedly fed the chidori, heavily swinging a leg over Scarlet’s other side and gripping his left shoulder. Straddling him, Midnight carefully took aim- If he missed, there probably wouldn’t be enough energy left for a second try.
In the midst of his narrow tunnel of concentration, Midnight heard faint laughing. He narrowed his eyes, trying to shake the blurriness away.
“Why are you laughing?” he demanded gruffly. Scarlet s*, silent now, and Midnight had no doubt that were Midnight’s legs not squeezing Scarlet’s sides, the idiot would be clapping like the *ed seal he was. As it was, tears were running down his face, and they made Midnight extremely angry for no particular reason.
“You’re-!” Scarlet gasped, “a paranoid idiot!”
“!?!” the chidori fizzled out as Midnight ran out of chakra, and, a little panicked, he s* his sword as though that would bring back the blue sparks.
Hands grabbed his wrist and arm. A leg wrapped around his own left, and suddenly the lightning nin found himself flat on his back. His sword clattered across the rooftop, out of reach.
Scarlet’s tired, soot-covered, but smug face grinned down at him. He was somehow in better shape, of the two, even after taking a Lightning Annulus. Then again, he had only gotten hit once.
‘Kuso!’ Midnight had wasted his energy going constantly on the offence. He wriggled weakly, trying to regain the upper hand.
“The conclusions you jump to!” Scarlet exclaimed. He leaned forward. Hands firmly pressed Midnight’s shoulders down, preventing further struggle.
“What were you doing, then, huh!?” Midnight snarled, glaring up at his teammate, “What were you doing, sneaking around in the dead of night to some su*ious hovel in the middle of the woods??”
“How dare you! I happen to like that ‘hovel,’” Scarlet put on a front of mock-offense, “But you don’t need to know about it at this point in time, or any point in time for that matter, so don’t worry your pretty head about it. Now…” He slowly raised two fingers in front of his chest, and Midnight’s eyes widened, before quickly realizing that he should probably close them.
Not quick enough.
“Go to sleep…”
Scarlet’s whisper sank into the murky red darkness with him. His eyes rolled back into his head, and he knew no more.
Sorry everybunny, I'm not smart enough to come up with a good plot twist ¯\_( ̄▽ ̄;)_/¯
