|The Price of a Monster|
o0oDigging my hands into the pouch of my hoodie, I slinked by on the streets trying to * to the shadows in order to avoid any unnecessary attention. I could hear the people whispering about me, muttering words such as how dangerous I was, but to no surprise they didn't recognize me. I was an Anbu, after all. I knew how to mask my presence and hide my face. "It's rude to talk about people behind their backs." I muttered, sick of holding back all my thoughts and feelings simply because people would hate me for talking back. Yet, still, I kept walking as if I hadn't said anything, tense yet seemingly oblivious to the world. You should... let them know that you will not back down...But somehow my voice had been louder than intended and the couple jumped in surprise and glared at me, the corner of the male's lips curled backwards in disgusted distaste as the woman staggered back in fear. I stopped walking and stared at him with lazy, uncaring eyes that seemed to only irate him further as he took a thundering step forward, his knuckles clenched white and teeth grit as he leered at me with hateful eyes. "Shut up, demo-" He hissed, and raised his fist to hit me, but the woman stopped him by grabbing his arm. His head whirled back to give her a troubled and wrath some gaze, but she simply s* her head and motioned to the stares of little kids who couldn't know about my status as a Jinchūriki(B). He cursed under his breath but backed down, his veins bulging in rage as I smirked victoriously at him. "Ha."Turning my head, I continued on the Ichiraku's but not before seeing the crowd of enraged adults hiding their children from me. Yeah, that's right, you should be scared of me.
"Old man! A miso-pork ramen for me!" I called out to Teuchi as I gently brushed aside the cloth banners as I entered the shop with a small smile on my face. Teuchi looked up from brewing his pot of ramen before cracking a hearty smile. "Naruto, my boy! How have you been?" He asked, placing down a bowl of fresh ramen with pork bits and miso swirls in them. "You came at just the right time, kiddo. I just finished up a batch." He remarked as I sat down on the booth and broke my chop*s, whispering a quick 'Itadakimasu(C)' before digging in and slurping the noodles. As I was eating, Ayame stepped in with a bag of groceries in her hand. "Ah! Naruto, welcome back!" She greeted me, casting a charming smile my way. I smiled up at her through my ramen, waving my chop*s lightly in a hello. The evening went on like this for a while, light conversation and a few noodles flying out of my nose at some horrible joke Teuchi made about me wedding Ayame, which caused her to blush profusely. It was odd. I never acted like this, and I never felt so happy and open with anyone like this before. Neither Kurama nor the old man had ever made me act so out of context as to have a noodle come shooting out of my nose at an unsuspected marriage arrangement. The entire time, that same annoyingly * grin would somehow sneak it's way onto my face like a runny nose- it just didn't give in. I knew there was a word for my relationship with them, but I couldn't think of it as it ran around my head and evaded my touch. Ah, I realized and couldn't help but smile, that's what it is. I concluded. The word was so foreign on my tongue that it felt like it was from an entirely different, alien language. It was something people liked to call 'family'. I'd never had one, of course, and I never would but I supposed that if I had one it would feel like this. It would be people I could trust and had no need to act like someone I'm not. I don't have to build walls or hear spiteful whispers from the nor feel that uncomfortable pressure of stares on my back. With them, my entirety of icy words and thoughts melted away at the smallest word from them. Perhaps this is what family was. I laughed and nodded at Ayame who commented on the tower of bowls stacked beside me, saying that I would eat them out of business. But this peace within me was so easily disrupted that I instantly felt an arriving presence and tossed on my mask, knowing that Ayame and Teuchi already knew my Anbu status. They were two of the few inhabitants of Konoha that were trusted enough to know of the secret after having proven themselves loyal -ahem- friends to me. A masked Anbu flickered to existence next to me and I quickly recognized his mask as Kurama's. "We have a mission." He stated, nodding to Teuchi who warily welcomed the masked man. Disappointed, I sighed and place down my bowl, thanking the two for the meal and bowing lightly before Kurama flickered the two of us away.♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤Terminology:(A)Shunshine: A teleportaition Jutsu that is rated Chunnin Rank.(B) Jinchūriki: One who holds a tailed beast.
