The prizes are based on how many Tailed Beast you flip open, and not which Tailed Beast you flip open. To get the 9 Tailed Beast rewards, you need to flip open all 9 of them. Your next reward is 6 Tailed Beast if you can open 2 more of them.

based on your screenshot, you have Four Total.
Thus providing you with the first two tier rewards.

miraculously, in his first 3 tailed beast, there is actually one tail and 3 tail. The other being 7 tail and there is no "7 tailed beast" reward.
Ergo, it's actually possible for him to believe that you get the X tail reward when you uncover that particular tailed beast, because that could have been what he have experienced.

Of course, I don't know why the mistake would have been made in the first place, just that it's possible that until 9 tails there have been nothing to disprove the notion.
