it's the medal that can be bought

jonin=gold

chunin=silver

genin=bronze

If you own the Jonin or Chunin medal, you will have the gold and silver shuriken next to your name respectively. This applies even for trial medal users.

It's the medals you can get. Even if it's for a trial you will still get it. Jonin is gold, Chunin is Silver and Genin is bronze.
