Chapter 6
I’m allowed one day to fitfully rest while the Hokage makes preparations to officially move me into Konoha. The paperwork would probably be exhausting to fill out. I sometimes saw the Raikage buried in piles of paper.
Oh well. Kage sufferings apparently persist even here.
Just then, a strange man walks into my hospital room. And I mean strange man.
Yes, I’m still paranoid after meeting Kaiza for the first time. But this isn’t Kaiza, unfortunately.
He’s wearing this thin metal plate around his head. I think it may be for decorative purposes and showing off the headband on it.
The dude also looks like he has no soul. His eyes look like he’s soulless, with no light in them.
Even when he’s standing in a white room, his eyes are still as dull as worn-out blades.
The unnerving brown eyes stare seemingly into my own soul. “…Senpai… whoa…” He leans in closer, the shadows dancing across his face in a way that I haven’t seen before.
Wait, wait, massive amounts of weird déjà vu. I give the creepy guy my version of What chu doin’? and scoot back.
The man finally seems to take the hint and backs away. Very slowly. Like he’s trying to tame a wild animal.
“Senpai, the kid really does look like you.” He looks to the right to speak to… a… wall…?
And suddenly, I see the famous Copy Ninja standing right where I’m certain was an empty wall.
“…I told you, Yamato, I don’t have a child.” The Hatake grumbles, his eye twitching as he gazes into an orange book. Do even jounin study books?
“And stop reading * in front of children.” The creepy guy who’s apparently ‘Yamato’ stares accusingly at the orange book.
What’s *? I ask mentally (and in later years, regret ever finding out).
The Yamato guy also notices me staring at the orange book with wide eyes. “See, you’re already corrupting children.”
I can’t help but feel alarmed at that statement.
The gray-haired ninja glares at me slightly before putting away the orange book. Is the book that precious to him??
Yamato has this look of slight awe on his face at the action.
Guess it is.
“Senpai, I’ll be straight with you here. You’re very unlucky. Very, very unlucky. The Hokage has personally assigned you to this task, and you can’t refuse unless you’re giving up on becoming a sensei.”
Oh no.
I see dark clouds in the air.
“Hokage-sama had DNA tests run on you two. I don’t know how, but it looks like you’re related to this child.” Yamato points at me.
Oh god. Related to the Copy Ninja?!
“In fact, the DNA strands were very similar. You may even be his father, though there’s some information the medics are stubbornly withholding. So now you have to take custody of this kid.” Yamato breathes out, looking exhausted.
Hatake Kakashi’s face looks stormy. Oh, this is not good.
“His hair is not gray like mine, are you blind? Also, his eyes are blue. BLUE!” The jounin rants, steam coming out of his ears.
“You don’t want this kid to go to the orphanage, do you?” Yamato sighs.
“I honestly don’t CARE—” Kakashi starts to snap when I tug on his green vest.
This green vest is a little tattered, but still in okay condition.
I’ve seen this look a couple of times when someone’s trying to distract or mooch off someone.
I widen my eyes and scrunch up my lips in what I hope is a convincing pout. “I don’t want to go to the orphanage…” I whimper. God, I NEVER thought I’d do this!
The two men in the room simply sweatdrop. The Copy Ninja looks especially lost on what to do.
When I try to summon a tear or two, the jounin tentatively puts his hand on my spiky head of hair.
I can’t help my face from changing immediately.
I stare at the Hatake with my best soulless eyes, trying to channel the dark shadows that dance across Yamato’s face.
The hand is instantly removed from my head.
“…So if the Hokage doesn’t kill me, this child will.” The Copy Ninja gulped. Oh wow, he’s expressing fear at a kid.
How marvelous, I chuckle inwardly.
“But Yamato, I don’t know how to raise a child. I don’t think I’ll be able to handle it. I’m not that kind of person.”
“Still,” Yamato tersely replies, “If you want to become Naruto’s sensei so badly, then you’ll have to juggle multiple kids at once. And I’m pretty sure he’ll be fine.” Yamato looks at me. “Right, Kyoma?”
Instead of my agreement, Yamato finds myself staring at him with soulless eyes. “How do you know my name?”
“…Yeah, he’ll be fine.” Yamato quickly turns to the Hatake, who sighs in resignation.
I grin and clutch onto his pants. “So, you’re my papa now, right? Can I call you that? Papa? PAPA?”
The gray-haired ninja stares down at me, unamused. “No.”
“But you ARE my papa.”
He looks at Yamato pointedly. “I’ll kill you in your sleep for putting the wrong ideas into his head.”
“Yeah, yeah, just go on and get the adoption over with.” Yamato quickly backs out of the hospital room.
The Copy Ninja looks down at me again. “Well then. I’m Hatake Kakashi. Don’t you dare call me Kakashi. Or Hatake. Or anything.”
“I’ll call you papa.”
Kakashi marches me out of the hospital immediately in a storm of rage.
He doesn’t say anything during the short trip over to a huge building with the fire emblem displayed on it, which I assume is the Hokage office. The Hokage doesn’t even look up when Kakashi kicks down the door and seethes, “I am done with this child.”
“No, you are not, Kakashi.” The Hokage pauses from filling out his mountain of paperwork. “You’re Kyoma’s father, and the only relative he has here. Frankly, I’m surprised he even has a relative here at all.”
“I don’t remember anyone ever contacting me about a child they gave birth to!”
“Yes, because that’s the strange thing about his DNA.” The Hokage looks at me. “Kyoma, you don’t need to hear this quite yet. This is for when you’re older.”
That’s when I know people are talking about classified information. Really big information that kids can’t know.
I reluctantly exit the office with a couple of ANBU to find Yamato waiting outside.
We both sit down on some benches and wait in tense silence.
“While senpai is talking to Hokage-sama, you’ll get to see senpai’s room,” he says suddenly. “It’s not big, so don’t expect much. Kakashi is really frugal despite the amount of ryo he’s earned.”
Eh, why not see the place I’ll probably be living in from now on?
Yamato led me to a really small apartment (which was probably only one room big) and swung open the door.
