Have you tried the Do Not Disturb Mode? Click On Friends -> Manage Friends -> Do Not Disturb top right.

Maxing out your friend's list also works, so just fill it up with people and remove an inactive if you wanna add someone new. I've never tried 'do not disturb' mode, so I'm not sure if that's simpler than my suggested method.

do as TCOdelt did put do not disturb on it blocks all friend requests, people challenging you etc
