Summary: Kyoma finds himself waking up to a cruel reality.
Note: Some more angst for you guys! :/ i felt so guilty writing this

Chapter 1

“AAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUGGHHH!”
The screams. They’re always there, tugging at my conscience. It’s painful just to hear the pitch of their voices. But they die out eventually. Usually.

I’m scared. Will I be screaming like the other kids soon? What’s happening to them? What’s happening to me? They’re slowly dying, while I float here in this endless space.
BEEP

I can’t do anything. I can’t move a muscle, I can’t open my eyes. I’m blind to the whole picture here.

...HELP US!

Something cold is touching the side of my arm.

This never happened before.

I thought the nightmares were gone.
BEEP
---I shoot out of the white hospital covers, shocking the nurse sitting right by me. She clutches her heart for a moment, but then she regains her composure, squeezing the blanket I’m under. The nurse doesn’t notice that I’m breaking out into cold sweat, too.
I can’t help but notice the heart monitor strapped to me, still beeping.
My heartbeat shoots up, and then turns into a squiggle of a line.
“Fuuji Kyoma? How are you feeling?”
I stare back at the nurse su*iously. My expression must look repulsive, because the nurse falters for a moment. “You’ve been in a coma for a few days now. It’s important that you—“
“Did I miss anything that Raikage-sama sent out?” I cut her off briskly.
“Raikage-sama wants to see you once you’re recovered. Your physical health seems to be fine, but—“
That’s all I listen to before throwing off the bland covers. “Why didn’t you say that first?” I pick up my jacket and sling it over my hospital gown. Whatever he says about my failure… I'll have to listen to it eventually.
The nurse is shocked once again. “People in comas can’t be waken up by outsiders! And you must not leave the hospital!”
Ignoring the nurse’s complaints, I use the Body Flicker Technique, leaving the nurse in the dust while I rush through the streets. Crazy old nurse. How is she even doing her job?
I burst into the Raikage’s office, slightly woozy. Mabui glances over from the Raikage’s desk, unamused. Some jounin guarding the door glance su*iously at me for a second. Darui drops his papers in surprise.
The Raikage simply looks over to me. “Kyoma, you’re not supposed to be out of the hospital yet. That was surprisingly quick.”
Then the Raikage glares at me like he expects me to go back to the hospital immediately. I step back a little.
“Raikage-sama, what of my mission?” I cut to the point, anxiously waiting for an answer. The Raikage’s surely mad. Will I be demoted to an academy student?
The Raikage’s expression suddenly turns grave. “Kyoma. The night your teammates were killed…”
A horrifying flash of red.
Breathe in, breathe out, Kyoma. Listen to the Raikage.
I take a deep breath, drawing in chakra. I tune into the Raikage’s words again.
“…was the night I decided to make plans to invade Konoha.”
I held my breath. The other adults in the room suddenly hushed up.
The Raikage was serious.
“We’ve always been on rocky grounds. I was a tad su*ious when they sent out a messenger to take a scroll to us, especially concerning a truce.”
We’re going into war?
“Those people that attacked your team… were originally a Konoha convoy sent to make peace with us. In reality, they were probably plotting to whittle down our ranks all along.” The Raikage looks at me with an unreadable expression on his face.
My eyes widen. No. He’s lying. It can’t be.
I look at the Raikage accusingly. If he suspected something, then why send my team to the sharks? Why send us to our deaths?
Oh god.
There’s a strange dampness on my cheeks.
God, no… breathe, breathe, breathe!
I can’t get the oxygen to my lungs fast enough. I’m gasping for air as the Raikage looks concerned—but also slightly irritated. To think that his ‘little disciple’ would lose control like this.
“Kyoma! Now is not the time to cry! Get a hold of yourself!” The Raikage shouts. Mabui looks slightly concerned but uncomfortable at the same time. She doesn’t step in, since the Raikage basically acts as my guardian.
I don’t care! I don’t care at all!
I choke on the tears, curling into a shameful ball.
What is a six-year-old like me supposed to do anyways?!
The Raikage’s voice softens. “The earlier you move one, the easier it gets. Shinobi like you must learn this. The civilians can’t.”
My cheeks already feel damp. I must look ridiculous. My body’s shaking, fingers grabbing onto nothing.
Exasperated, the Raikage marches over and grabs me by the shoulders. I feel all of the energy inside of me sap away instantly as he picks me up. “You can watch the funeral,” he mutters, “but you’re staying in the hospital until further notice.”
Darui winces at the Raikage’s words, and the jounin just open the doors for the Raikage to carry me out.
My mind's too far away from here to even care anymore.
