What does white-list exactly mean?

i.e. I heard that people who enter the battlefield for GNW (when they join GNW) they can't see where are members from that group placed. So, basically they can't see where are ppl, on which battlefield are they placed?
This helps against spys. That's what I've heard.

Did I understand that right? Or I'm missing something?
