The devs don't need to give any information as to why this change is happening. That's not what their job entails. The playerbase doesn't need to know about the inner workings of a company.
The devs should, however, tell us that a change is happening in the first place, especially when it directly affects us.
If this information had been known, say, during the Events notice, there would have been grumbles and complaints (there always are), but people would have been able to plan ahead and get adjusted to the news.
Having his information brought to us like this, through a whistle*er, catches the playerbase off guard. There's the initial question of whether this is legit, or not. And after that, questioning whether the devs would've ever released this information if it wasn't for the whistle*er. Some people start attacking the devs. Others defend them. The whole thing gets complicated and antagonistic.
