You got it right you have to wait to unlock more main characters. I selected in order of usefulness for completing ninja exams. Fire and Water good for a lot of the exams below exam 101. Light can be as useful as fire and water, however might need higher stats since light doesnt rely on dots like ignition or poison. Wind is strong but the lack of any control means that you are forced to have even higher stats than light to pass exams.

you can unlock 1 new main every 6 levels
at level 66 you'll be able to unlock your 2nd, 72 your 3rd and at level 78 your fourth

I was also earth main from the begining, first one I unlocked was fire main, helped me a lot in some ninja exams where you need control

I'm level 77 now and still have to unlock the lightning main
also, if you do the challenge to unlock another main you won't automatically change, just so you know and when you change class you have to wait 24 hours for another free class change ie change back to earth main, otherwise you have to spend 100 ingots
