In terms of PRACTICAL advice for a new f2p, I would say try to get Choji GNW 4* and BT as fast as you can, his frags can be redeemed in exchange for survival trial points. He is the best completely f2p pos 1 carry you can get quickly at the start of the game. After that, just keep saving your coupons and then when you've gotten to like 30-35k coupons and there is a good Fuku deal going on that week, you should buy whoever the top meta ninja is at that stage. It used to be SOSP Naruto but now that Edo Tensei-Release Madara breakthroughs came out, it's not as clear cut of a "use SOSP Naruto or lose" situation anymore.

For me, I went for Edo Nagato. I am fully f2p and I have recruited Kakuzu (Earth Grudge Fear) (it took me quite a while to get as it costs either 165 or 160 per fragment during events).

I am currently 5 frags away from Kisame fusion. I also have Choji GNW partial BT and he's pretty good in arena with chinese naruto, if you have him. A good team with lightning main could be with Choji (GNW), Kurenai Summer (which I didn't get full attendance so missed it), and Rin with 3+ stars.)

I am someone who picked up the game pretty late so currently, I'm level 95 with only 56,000 power. My team is currently Nagato (Full BT), Kakuzu(EGF), and regular Konan (Full BT).

If you have the following ninja, use them: Kushina (Habanero), Edo Itachi (This month's attendance), New Year Hashirama, Izuna, Madara (Warring States).

Currently one of the best options to go for is Naruto [Sage of Sixth Path]. Because with his breakthroughs he is one of the best ninjas in the game.
If you manage to breakthrough him, you can go for a very f2p friendly line up with Hashirama [New Year], and Rin Nohara.
