I think you know better that events during the holidays are usually terrible in comparison to the normal event cycle.

We technically as a community could if p2w players stopped recharging it happened like 2 years ago on the German side of the game a bunch of the top players stopped recharging.

The issue is the german server is much smaller than the EN server. It also doesn't help that based on my observations, the distribution of whales is in a u-shape with newer servers contributing. Maybe closing the brazilian servers (based on what the players have said) contributed to the increasing # of whales since they started to play on here.
