My friends are already past Lv 6 in the friendship level and I still haven't acquired the medal, or Im doing it wrong?

That medal is asking you to get friends to level 6, so getting friends that are below level 6, up to it. So, friends that are already level 6, or past it, do not count.

easy to answer, just remove and add again your friend, next up to lvl 6. I hope this help u

If you remove a friend and add them back, your friendship level will drop to level 1.
