Hi! They both work. The Attribute Bonus can be seen reflected on the bottom of the screen as well as affecting Battle Power. The Specialty Rank and bonus granted is shown in the "Ninja Assist" interface but does not affect battle power. Specialty Rank ninjas grants a bonus to attribute specific ninjas in battle (you can test the difference in battle), but is not reflected in the battle power.
