So I've noticed that fighting mobs in the fields (forest of death etc) gives exp to your off ninjas if they aren't fully lvled. Is that all it's used for? Been fighting them for awhile and don't notice anything else increasing.

Yep. I'm sure they're just for leveling your other characters plus test your formation, combos and such.

They are sometimes useful for Bounty missions, Earn points , etc...
Best way is to Team up with someone and go Attack.
