I agree that it seems to be rng, I have tested by claiming only the middle option for 2 weeks straight to see if the odds aren't altered and haven't gotten any essence be it gold or not in that time frame. 14 days with supposed 33.33% chance of the essence and not 1 time getting that option raises su*ion, so most likely the rates aren't evenly distributed at 33.33%, therefore it is similar to the Cat Quiz support ninja where getting it right is pure coincidence.
