I just noticed today, on my lvl 100 character that the gate of death in 8 gates are open. On my lvl 99 char, it is still locked. So I guess it unlocks at lvl 100? 0.0

It still doesn't tell you in game. It just magically opens when you reach 100. If you are 99 or below, the game just say "not open yet". For the other gates, the game actually tell you at what level it opens if you are too low level.
