Basically as a free player you have to stop leveling "almost completely" to throw off the power ratio enough to compete in events like Sage & Matsuri in a manner that looks like a spender.

Personally, this was the way I was playing like 5 months before cross server sage was even an idea so I lucked out because I simply like to take things slow.
