Also from what I remember of Deidara vs. Gaara, that's completely true - to affect that much sand across the entire village all at once to stop a giant clay bomb that likely took at least weeks or months to prepare is definitely some Kage-level stuff. We also have to remember that Gaara is fallible to a point where he has to make sand armor, because he's not very fast. He's a powerhouse and a tank. He's not a Lee or a Sasuke, he can't stop everything, but he doesn't need to, since he has sand.

Also, I imagine moving that much sand isn't an issue, but moving it all at once made the mental strain so severe that he got knocked out. He's, what, 17 though? He only improves from there, and without Shukaku, I might add, which probably makes him even more deserving of being Kazekage when he can keep up with the likes of Tsunade or the others.

I still completely have it as my headcanon that you're really just an Anbu Operative sent to keep Konoha's last Uchiha and the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki out of trouble.
