I will only hit 85 this week, which means I still will have weeks/months of grinding to get to 90. Personally, i would have rather the cap stay where it was for now, a bunch of new missions and content developed, and then just mass raised the cap to 100.

Sure there would have still been those people who have so much extra XP that they instantly jump to cap day 1, but the only way that would be different is if Oasis would have capped xp at 85, so that no one could earn extra xp, that way everyone had to spend the same amount of time to get from the old cap to the new cap.
