Right now one method is to friend them, or possibly (but I'm not certain of this) if you got someone doing an application you might be able to click on their name and send them a message through this option.

unfortunate. Yeah, but the friend request method dont work for me. Noone seems to pay attention much to it.

Actually it's not that they don't pay attention too much to it cause they don't notice it...
But it's more of like they don't care, Not to be mean okay? I know its harsh to hear, but when a friend request is made a huge icon will show up and will show who sent a friend request to you. So in short, Its not that the friend request method doesn't work for you but it's more of like their choice to whether care or not care about your friend request since there is already a huge pop-up if there is a friend request, and its either they accept, deny, or ignore. So yeah thats pretty much to it. :) :$ :)
